A Pleasant Christmas Memory
One of my favorite Christmas memories is the first Christmas I shared with my husband and my two little girls that made us a “ready-made” family. We had a whirlwind quick engagement, so I didn’t meet my husband’s parents till days before our wedding, which was April of 1988, but I spent enough time with them to discover what sweet people they were, but really I had no idea how thoroughly my girls and I were “adopted” into the family. We enjoyed our “honeymoon” year that year, living in a small one-bedroom house, and Christmas was probably going to be special no matter what, but here’s what happened….
It was a week or so before Christmas, and a rather large Christmas box arrived from my husband’s parents. We didn’t have too much to put under the tree if we had had a tree, so it was quite exciting to receive this box for Christmas. We didn’t make it till Christmas however. By a unanimous vote—we decided to open the box.
And so we did and what a delight that box was! Although we did have the wherewithal to leave alone the wrapped packages of gifts, there were plenty of unwrapped packages of mouthwatering fruits, nuts, candies, chocolates, etc. It was a blessing beyond measure for us that night! And that was when I finally had the realization that I had been “fully adopted” into this new family of mine. I wasn’t just Bruce’s wife; I and my girls were accepted members of this generous family who loved me and my girls without condition. It was a brand-new experience for me, one I will always treasure—that first Christmas I celebrated with my husband and his family.
Thank you Yvonne for sharing your lovely memory KEW
